How to convert the tables in a PDF to Excel

PDF to Excel is experimental. It reads your pages for tables in one pass and finds most tables set in rows and columns, though it misses some, so check each one against the page before you rely on it. Save the ones you want as one Excel workbook or as CSV files. Without an account, nothing is uploaded.

Export all tables: Page 1, table 2, of costs by quarter, ticked, which continues on page 2 with its repeated header row left out, saved as one table across the page break.
Experimental: two tables found, one joined across a page break.

Export the tables in five steps

  1. Open your PDF. Choose it in PDF to Excel; Export all tables reads the pages.
  2. Check the tables against the page. Each is a card, such as Page 1, table 1; one marked Needs a look says why.
  3. Untick any you don’t want.
  4. Choose Excel (.xlsx) or CSV.
  5. Save them. The button counts them, such as Save 2 tables, and the workbook downloads.

Good to know

  • A sheet per table, named by page: p3-1 is the first table on page 3. In Excel, numbers, percentages and year-first dates stay values, not text.
  • A table beside a column of text isn’t found: draw a box over it with the Table to CSV tool.
  • A scan needs OCR PDF first.
  • Up to 500 pages are read in one run.
  • A formula in the table? Copy it as LaTeX. Everything starts at OneStopPDF, and there are 48 single-purpose tools at onestoppdf.com/tools.

Questions

What about a table that runs onto the next page?

With the same columns, it’s joined into one table without its repeated header, unless you turn on Keep pages separate.

Does it work on a scanned PDF?

No, a scan has no text to read, so run OCR PDF on it first.
